IT'S NOT THE FORM - It's the Genius
It’s Not the Form — It’s the Genius is a speculative essay — and ultimately an exhortation — concerning artistic originality, Genius, Form, Reflection and the Rules by which art is judged.

Beginning with the older meaning of Genius as an attendant or guardian spirit, the essay moves to Kant’s proposition that “Genius gives the Rule to art”, asking what happens when the discoveries of exceptional artists are subsequently identified, classified and turned into conventions.
Moving through Plato’s Eidos, Kantian aesthetics, Early Romantic Reflection and Postmodern eclecticism, the essay argues that artist and critic alike must remain capable of seeing a Form as a Form — something historically produced and open to reconsideration, rather than a final law.
Through Picasso, El Greco, Renaissance drawing and the Virgin of Vladimir, it considers why certain works seem to possess a vitality that cannot be reduced to an identifiable formal recipe — described here as “vibrant kineticism.” A living artistic discovery may become a style, a style a method, and a method eventually a convention.
The essay therefore culminates as an exhortation: learn the Forms, understand why they worked, but do not become imprisoned by them. Remain sufficiently Reflective to recognise when an established Rule has exhausted itself — and when something genuinely new may initially appear wrong because the Rule capable of recognising it does not yet exist.
Its final movement returns to the ancient image of the attendant Genius: a mind capable of inhabiting a solution without becoming identical with it —
A guardian against self-imitation.
