A Curious Encounter at Hammersmith Station
Richard Dawkins stood on the platform at Hammersmith station, glancing occasionally at his watch as he awaited the next train. The evening rush had subsided, leaving a calm hush over the station. As he pondered his next lecture, he felt a gentle tug at his trouser leg.
"Excuse me, sir," said a small voice.
Startled, Dawkins looked down to see a funny little doggy gazing up at him with bright, intelligent eyes. The dog had a whimsical air, with one ear perked up and the other flopped over.
"Did... did you just speak?" Dawkins asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Indeed, I did," replied the dog. "I've been wanting to discuss something with you. A philosophical matter, if you don't mind."
Dawkins blinked in astonishment but, ever the curious scientist, nodded slowly. "Very well. This is certainly unexpected."
The dog hopped up onto the bench beside him. "I've been pondering the nature of consciousness and thought you might entertain a question that's been on my mind."
"Go on," said Dawkins, intrigued.
"Why is it that each of us experiences consciousness from our own unique perspective?" the dog began. "For instance, why am I experiencing life as a dog speaking to Richard Dawkins and not as, say, Napoleon Bonaparte or an entity on a distant planet billions of years from now?"
Dawkins considered this. "Well, consciousness arises from the complex interactions within our brains—or, in your case, perhaps a highly unusual canine neural network. It's a product of biology and evolution."
The dog tilted its head. "But doesn’t that explanation skip over something rather fundamental? Out of all the possible vessels for consciousness—spanning the vastness of time and space—how is it that a consciousness is assigned to one vessel rather than another? Why am I me and not you—or someone, or something, else entirely?"
Dawkins frowned slightly. "Are you asking for a mechanism?"
"Precisely," the dog replied. "If consciousness is the result of physical processes, then what determines that a specific consciousness corresponds to a specific body or mind? And here’s the kicker: for consciousness to be assigned at all, wouldn’t it already need to exist as a distinct and discrete entity, waiting to be tethered to a particular vessel? But if that’s the case, doesn’t it presuppose its own existence, creating a circular problem?"
Dawkins leaned back, his curiosity deepening. "So you're suggesting that assigning consciousness requires pre-existing distinctiveness, which itself depends on the very consciousness it seeks to explain."
"Exactly," the dog said, wagging its tail slightly. "And beyond that, how can two discrete consciousnesses exist simultaneously? If the act of assigning a consciousness relies on an already existing, separate consciousness, where does it begin? The very concept seems to fold back on itself. This isn’t just a matter of understanding the mechanism—it’s a problem with the very possibility of discrete consciousness existing at all."
Dawkins crossed his arms. "Are you implying this paradox might point to something metaphysical, like a Brahman-like philosophy—a universal consciousness from which all discrete minds emerge?"
The dog pondered this for a moment. "Not necessarily," it replied. "While such an explanation has its merits, it raises its own profound difficulties. A Brahman-like philosophy suggests that individual consciousnesses are split from an overarching universal mind. But here’s the problem: for a discrete consciousness to be split off and assigned to a vessel, it would have to already possess the qualities of individuality. In other words, it would need to exist as something capable of being assigned. That implies a pre-existing separateness, which requires a kind of vessel before its future vessel is assigned. It’s circular all over again—there’s no coherent starting point."
Dawkins raised an eyebrow. "So you're saying that even a Brahman-like framework, with its notion of universal consciousness, doesn’t resolve the issue because it still depends on discreteness at some stage to explain the individuality we experience."
"Exactly," the dog said. "While it’s an interesting idea and shouldn’t be dismissed, it struggles to explain how a discrete consciousness can experience itself as the center of its universe—this defining quality of subjective experience—while simultaneously being part of a universal whole. If the overarching consciousness exists, and the discrete mind is merely an extension of it, how does that discrete mind come to be ‘assigned’ a particular perspective? The moment it becomes distinct enough to be assigned, it is no longer fully integrated with the whole. And so the problem persists."
Dawkins stroked his chin. "It’s as though the Brahman explanation exchanges one circularity for another."
"Precisely," the dog said. "But it’s important to note that this doesn’t invalidate Brahmanism or similar philosophies. The point is that the question is so profound—and our tools so far might not be sufficient to solve it—that we need to keep many possibilities on the table. Ancient religious texts, metaphysical philosophies, and speculative ideas like panpsychism might have insights we haven’t fully appreciated. We don’t yet know what might prove indispensable in resolving this mystery."
"So you’re advocating for intellectual humility," Dawkins said thoughtfully.
"Exactly," the dog replied. "The aim isn’t to prescribe an answer but to recognize the enormity of the question—and to remind ourselves to keep an open mind. Some mysteries are so fundamental that they demand we explore ideas that might otherwise seem incompatible or premature."
The train’s arrival was announced over the loudspeakers. Dawkins glanced toward the incoming headlights, then back at the dog.
"You’ve given me a great deal to think about," Dawkins admitted. "It’s rare to encounter such a philosophical mind—especially in a dog."
The dog smiled—a curious sight. "I’m just here to inspire a little wonder. The rest is up to you."
As the train pulled into the station, Dawkins stood up. "Will you be boarding?"
The dog shook its head. "No, I think I’ll stay here a bit longer. Plenty more travelers to talk with."
Dawkins stepped toward the train, then paused. "May I ask your name?"
The dog winked. "Let’s just say I’m a friend of those who question."
With a nod, Dawkins boarded the train. As it departed, he found a seat by the window and looked back at the platform. The funny little doggy was already engaging a bewildered passenger in what appeared to be another deep conversation.
Leaning back, Dawkins couldn’t help but smile. The encounter had been unexpected, but it stirred something within him—a reminder that mysteries are what drive the pursuit of knowledge, and that profound questions deserve all the open-mindedness we can muster.
